Laughter Is Fati's Best Medicine
Given her capacity as a med officer, it may be surprising that sometimes, Gibson Street Dedham RSP Fati Adams sees laughter as the best medicine. Three of the four residents use wheelchairs; one communicates non-verbally. Fati recalls one being reserved with new staff but responding to those who engaged with her and make her laugh.
“All of them love the attention and understanding of their unique personalities and needs,” Fati says. “Therefore, it’s important that all individuals feel heard” and that staff understand their unique challenges.
Fati’s manager, Arnette Val, says that she “takes time to interact with the individuals on her shift and she sings and dances with them. She is a vital force who simultaneously drives superior individual care and cultivates an exceptional team spirit.”
It never would have happened without the recommendation of a friend who told Fati about TILL. She was hired in 2014 in a relief position, then expanded to full-time. Today, she says the greatest challenge is fulfilling the simultaneous demands on her attention from individuals with profound physical needs.
“Maintaining a positive attitude helps me navigate through challenging tasks,” she says, “and I love seeing a project through to the end and celebrating everyone’s hard work.”
